“If My Heart Could Take Your Pain”

I wrote this after embracing one of my daughters as she was walking through grief. I wanted so badly to take the pain from her—it made my heart physically ache. We all know we can't take grief away, whatever its form, but we can walk beside the ones we love. We can help clear the path, so hope and light can make their way in. If you're walking through pain—or guiding someone who is—I hope these words bring comfort.

I Hugged You So Tightly

I hugged you so tightly,
As tears streamed down your face.
I paused before I released my grip,
In hopes that I could replace

My heart with your heart,
So you could feel no pain.
I hugged you so tightly,
But your pain remained the same.

A mixture of heartache,
Grief, the fear of the unknown.
If my heart replaced your heart,
You would know there was hope.

Hope of a new life that I promise you will find,
New love, new faces, new places,
Then you could intertwine

The love before your heart did break,
And leave you to define
The grief of the heart—
It’s yours, not mine.

For I walked it before,
I wish I could clear the way,
But your heart must walk this path,
My heart can’t replace.

But I’ll still hold you a little longer,

In hopes I can replace

My heart with your heart,

As the tears stream down your face.

Much love,

Candy
